About the calculator
Frequently asked questions
How much water should I store per person in the UK?
GOV.UK Be Ready recommends 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, for 3 days. That is 9 litres per person. Be Ready says you'll need more for cooking and washing, and extra for baby formula, medical devices and pets.
Why 3 days?
Be Ready says being ready for 3 days helps you manage while support reaches those most in need. If you choose 7 days, the calculator uses the same official daily figure for 7 days. That is our arithmetic, not a separate official 7-day figure.
How much food do I need?
Be Ready doesn't give a weight or a calorie figure. It asks for food for 3 days with a long shelf life that doesn't need a fridge or cooking, such as tinned meat, fish or vegetables, dried fruit and nuts, and says it's best to buy food you'd usually eat. So the calculator gives you a list, not a made-up number.
How much water do pets need?
Be Ready lists pet food and bottled water but doesn't give an amount. Use your pet's normal daily food and water, and ask your vet if you're not sure.
Is anything I enter sent to you?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and saves your answers only on this device. If you use the share link, it carries only the numbers you chose (people, pets and days), never names.
