North Yorkshire is a big county with remote villages, moors, coast and the city of York. Local services plan together for the emergencies most likely to affect it. This page gathers their official sources in one place so you know where to look before you need them. Prepared, not panicked.

We are an independent guide. We don't run any of these services or show live information. For current incidents, use the official links below.

Who to contact locally

Emergency planning here is led by the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum (LRF), which covers York and North Yorkshire. Its partners include the emergency services, local councils, the Environment Agency, Northern Powergrid, Yorkshire Water and voluntary groups. Its risk register carries the name "Ready Together".

Local risks the forum lists

The York and North Yorkshire Community Risk Register (2025) says the forum has plans for risks including:

  • pandemic influenza
  • flooding
  • adverse and severe weather
  • marine pollution
  • disruption to or failure of the electricity network
  • food supply contamination, air quality and land movement
  • terrorism and cyber security

The register focuses on the four areas it thinks are most likely to affect communities: severe weather, health, utilities disruption and cyber attack. The forum's risks page adds that utilities disruption covers power cuts and loss of broadband, water or gas.

The register is clear that including a risk doesn't mean it will happen, and that the forum has plans in place to respond.

How to sign up for local flood warnings

  1. Check your long-term flood risk on GOV.UK. It covers rivers and the sea, surface water, reservoirs and, where data exists, groundwater.
  2. Sign up for free flood warnings from the Environment Agency, online or on Floodline, 0345 988 1188 (24 hours). The forum's Get ready page links to the same service.
  3. Sign up for Met Office weather warnings, which the forum also recommends.

In York, the council has its own flood advice pages. Our guide to what flood alerts and warnings mean explains each level.

Power cuts in North Yorkshire

The forum's risk register points residents to Northern Powergrid for local power cut information. In the register, Northern Powergrid says you can call 105 to report a power cut or electricity emergency.

Our Northern Powergrid power cut page explains how to report a cut, check its map, join its priority services register and claim compensation. Not sure which operator covers you? Use our network operator finder.

Water supply

The risk register points to Yorkshire Water's priority services for extra help during an outage. Check your bill to confirm who supplies your home, or use the Water UK postcode checker, as CCW suggests.

The register suggests a grab bag with a wind-up torch and radio, tinned and dried food and drinking water, and asks you to stay alert for hoax callers posing as utility workers. Our Priority Services Register guide explains who qualifies for extra help.
