Gas masks and filters: what to know before you buy (UK)

We don't link any masks yet. Here is why, and what to check if you are thinking about one.

About these links: they are plain links to ordinary retailer pages. We may earn from some links in future; we don't now. If that changes, links will be marked * and this note will say "Ad". We haven't tested these products and we don't rank them. Prices are the ones we read on the date shown and will change. How we make money

What UK advice says first

For a radiation emergency, the UK advice is to go in, stay in and tune in. A mask is not part of the official household advice. See shop for war and nuclear emergencies.

What to check

  • Not ex-military. Avon Protection says its S10 and FM12 are UK restricted products, and warns against buying them from unauthorised sellers. We never link them.
  • Filter dates. Filters have a use-by date. Old surplus filters may not work.
  • Fit. A mask only works if it seals to your face. HSE explains fit testing for work masks.
  • The standard. Ask the seller which standard the mask and filter are tested to, and quote it as their claim.

Who it's for

Most households: spend the money on water, a radio and a stocked inner room first.

How we judged

We haven't compared mask models. We haven't checked UK shipping for any brand yet, so we don't link one.

No star ratings: we haven't collected reviews, and we don't show anyone else's. No product can promise to keep you safe.
