Power cut
Light, a radio, a way to charge phones, and warmth. Most of it costs under £50. A power station is optional.
Flood
A grab bag by the door, papers in a waterproof wallet, a torch and a radio. Flood doors and barriers are a bigger job: get a survey first.
Storm
Storms bring power cuts and blocked roads. Get light, news and warmth ready, and keep the car kit topped up.
War and nuclear
The official UK advice for a radiation emergency is to go in, stay in and tune in. So the kit is a well-stocked room: water, food, a radio, light and first aid.
Water outage
Be Ready asks for 3 litres of drinking water per person per day for 3 days. Add a way to treat water and a toilet plan.
Evacuation and go bag
A bag you can carry for a long walk, with papers, medicines, water, a torch and warm, waterproof layers.
Winter
Keep one room warm, keep the cold out of your body, and be ready for a power cut on the coldest night.
Cyber attack and bank outage
If cards, phones or the internet stop, you need some cash, numbers on paper and a radio. Most of this costs little.
