Power at home: back-up power, running costs and staying safe
What your fridge, router and phone need in a power cut, how big a power station has to be, heating safely without mains power, and what the National Risk Register says about the grid.
Power cut: the first 10 minutes
- Use a torch, not candles.
- Report it: call 105 free in England, Scotland and Wales, or 03457 643 643 in Northern Ireland.
- Switch off irons, ovens, electric fires and fryers. Unplug the TV and computer in case of a surge when the power comes back.
- Keep the fridge and freezer shut. A fridge stays cold for about 4 hours; a full freezer for about 48 hours.
- Never use a barbecue or camping stove indoors (carbon monoxide). Check on neighbours who may need help.
In danger? Call 999. Follow instructions from the emergency services, radio and GOV.UK: they come first.
